Currently the main opposition party is the PSD (Partidul Social Democrat =
Social Democratic Party) under the leadership of Mircea Geoana. Also the former
president Ion Iliescu is member of the party. It has 113 seats in the 332-seat
Chamber of Deputies. The symbol shows a rounded square with three roses and the
party abbreviation "PSD". It is described in art. 2 of the
party statute:
"Semnul electoral al Partidului Social Democrat consta( în trei boboci de
trandafir ce au la baza tulpinilor înscrisă denumirea prescurtată a
partidului - P.S.D., iar însemnul partidului este mâna cu trandafir -
însemnul Internat,ionalei Socialiste."
(my translation: The electoral symbol of the Social Democratic Party
consists of three rose buds, under the stalks of which there is the
written the abbreviated name of the party - P.S.D.; whereas the symbol
of the party is the hand with the rose - the symbol of the Socialist
International.)
The flag is blue with the electoral symbol in the center.

The main forerunner of the current PSD was the PDSR (Partidul Democraţiei Sociale din România = Party of Social Democracy in Romania).
This was founded in 1992 as FDSN (Frontul Democrat al Salvării
Naţionale = Democratic National Salvation Front), being one of the
factions of the then-ruling FSN (Frontul Salvării Naţionale = National
Salvation Front) (the other became the PD). The FDSN changed its name to
PDSR in 1993, and merged with the smaller PSDR to from the current PSD
in 2001. It governed the country from 1992-1996 and from 2000-2004.
The symbol of the PDSR was very similar to the current PSD symbol, only the party abbreviation actually changed. So one might assume that the flag was corresponding. I have only one photograph that perhaps shows the PDSR flag, but not clearly [http://www.adevarulonline.ro/img/photoarchive/PDSR-birou-executiv-015.jpg]. This is a tentative reconstruction of the PDSR party flag.
